Description: This content, which is part of the multimedia material of the book Borderless Education in the Amazon: trajectory and perspectives of the UFPA distance learning, brings the report given by the professor Francisco Matos, who tells his experience with the distance learning, first at the Brazilian Universal Institute and later at the UFPA with the PLANEAR specialization course, in which he first entered to verify the quality process, what was confirmed during the course. As professor of the Geosciences Institute at the Federal University of Pará, he reveals that his experience with the distance learning has resulted a change of the teaching method of the specialization courses at the Geosciences Institute: Mining and Mineral Technology, Mineral Policy and Economy and Hydric and Environmental Management, which were offered in the presencial way and are now only offered in the distance learning way. He underlines that this change was positive to the Geosciences Institute, which now has the possibility to attend more students all over Brazil. He also emphasizes that this experience has made the course professors change their class dynamic in the presencial way. He still points out the necessity of defeating the prejudice and that the presencial education has a broader appropriation of the information and communication technologies, breaking with the paradigm of the student’s passivity before the transmission of knowledge. Distance and presencial learning must use the ICTs to help in the citizenship construction and in the access to both knowledge and culture.
